Director of Economic Development (Full-Time, Permanent)

Position Description: The Director of Economic Development is responsible for planning and implementing strategies to ensure the most innovative approaches are used to accomplish and promote growth and expansion within Fort William First Nation. This role is responsible for identifying, training, developing and implementing strategic, effective organizational processes and learning initiatives. The goal of this position is to help develop a strong, innovative economic structure that allows for the success of Fort William First Nation. The Director of Economic Development will have overall operational responsibility of Economic Development, Public Works and Bingo operations and will have a seat on Fort William First Nation’s Senior Management Team.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Plan, manage, and coordinate Fort William First Nation’s Economic Development efforts
  • Accurately represent management directives and employee needs by designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating policies and procedures
  • Seek out new economic development opportunities and funding sources
  • Oversight of the Public Works and Bingo departments including related long-range planning and budgeting
  • Determine how local economic factors will affect Fort William First Nation whether it be positively and negatively
  • Assess strategic opportunities that will benefit economic growth
  • Make economic recommendations to Executive Management and Chief and Council
  • Work closely with the finance department to ensure economic stability and to determine future economic strategies
  • Develop strategic plans to ensure innovative practices are implemented to support the economic growth of the company
  • Keep the executive team informed of significant problems that may jeopardize the achievement of company goals
  • Work with outside agencies and professional consultants as necessary
  • Review policies and procedures of various departments and recommend improvements which may increase economic development opportunities
  • Set strategic, organization-wide objectives and ensure implementation for these initiatives to ensure economic growth
  • Improve organizational capability by developing organizational assessment mechanisms, interpreting results, developing recommendations and action plans
  • Work directly with management to design, develop and implement corporate economic strategies and monitor the effectiveness of new strategic initiatives
  • Additional related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in planning, economics, business administration, or a related field is preferred
  • Four years’ responsible experience in economic development, mining sector, energy sector, tourism, marketing or a closely related field, focusing on the attraction of new business opportunities is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to meet strategic economic objectives for the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to manage economic core processes of an organization
  • Proven project management skills required
  • Able to make sound business decisions and evidence-based recommendations to senior management
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods and procedures used in the successful development of economic organizational growth
  • Effective communication skills with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills as well as presentation skills
  • Ability to work with leaders within business to develop innovative ideas and resources to execute initiatives
  • Inspire and lead a team to influence change
  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe products and e-mail required
  • Able to build and maintain lasting relationships with corporate departments, key business partners, and employees
  • Demonstrated ability to have a positive impact on business results
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license
