REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

This position operates under the general direction of the Director of Community Well-Being, with direct supervision provided by the Education Manager.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION

The Education Coordinator plays a vital role in organizing, delivering, and supporting education-related programs and services within Fort William First Nation. Working closely with the Education Manager, the Coordinator facilitates student success by managing day-to-day program operations, liaising with schools and families, and supporting departmental planning, communication, and reporting efforts. The Coordinator also serves as the first point of contact for post-secondary education and contributes to policy development and departmental growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work collaboratively with the Education Manager to support FWFN students and promote academic achievement.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for all post-secondary education inquiries.
  • Create post-secondary funding applications; and assist post-secondary students with funding applications, including intake, application review, and ongoing communication.
  • Support post-secondary graduation events, student recognition initiatives, and award distributions.
  • Support implementation of education policies and guidelines established by Fort William First Nation.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for school boards and external educational institutions (universities and colleges).
  • Help manage the needs of on-reserve band membership through tuition agreements with TBCDSB and Lakehead Public Schools.
  • Sit on relevant committees and attend school board, university and college meetings to support education outcomes and strengthen partnerships.
  • Maintain accurate databases and student files for all education levels (JK–Adult Ed/Post-Secondary).
  • Develop and manage education initiatives including the Backpack Program, Mental Health Kits, and Hygiene Kits, including coordinating these resources, events, and programs.
  • Assist with school trustee elections, staff incentive programs (e.g., holiday gifts), and event logistics for student recognition.
  • Liaise between students/families and post-secondary institutions, helping to bridge communication gaps and report issues or concerns to the Education Manager.
  • Support the Junior Kindergarten (JK) program (St. Ann Satellite Classroom).
  • Organize speech therapy support and other student-related services.
  • Create and manage bus registration forms, plan bus routes, and coordinate bus logistics.
  • Assist with researching and support purchasing surveillance systems to enhance school bus safety. View and review school bus camera footage as needed to support incident resolution and student safety.
  • Assist in the drafting and distribution of disciplinary letters and participate in basic conflict resolutions involving schools and families, including bussing staff.
  • Provide data support and contribute to reports related to ISC funding, Nominal Roll, Adult Education, Special Education, and more.
  • Assist with the development of job descriptions for all Education Department positions.
  • Assist in developing the Terms of Reference for the Education Portfolio.
  • Provide administrative and operational support to the Education Manager and perform delegated tasks as needed.
  • Participate in cross-training for all aspects of the Education Department to ensure continuity and support across roles.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Travel may be required.
  • Ability to attend and conduct presentations.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Overtime and on-call as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Education, Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences, or a related field
  • Experience in education administration, coordination or program development
  • Knowledge of Indigenous education systems, policies, and funding structures is an asset
  • Experience working with First Nation communities and an understanding of cultural protocols and traditions
  • Strong problem-solving and communications skills, including evidence of structured thinking and an ability to inspire confidence and passion in others
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with students, parents, staff, and community partners
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other related computer skills
